Education Assistant, Education & Training – Short-Term Contract Position (TRCA-136-21)

How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

The Education Assistant will assist with the successful implementation of the TRCA’s virtual and in person Community Learning programs and day camps at the Claremont Nature Centre and Swan Lake Outdoor Education Centre. The successful applicant will work directly with TRCA staff to support the administration and delivery of environmental education programs, presentations and camps.  The Education Assistant will prepare registration lists, develop learning materials, support camp supervision, moderate virtual programs and assist during in-person community events including tree plantings, nature walks and TRCA’s Conservation Youth Corps program.

Evening and weekend work are a function of the job as required. Occupational Health and Safety is a major responsibility of this position.

Major Responsibilities:

Perform the following tasks under general supervision:

  • Download registration and attendance reports for programs. Research environmental topics and develop learning materials for participants for a variety of programs (e.g. activity worksheets).

  • Provide support for in person Community Learning events by monitoring/organizing registration lists, collecting and cleaning equipment, assisting Coordinator at events and helping with event clean-up and administration.

  • Assist Coordinator with administering the Conservation Youth Corps (CYC) virtual program through reviewing Google Classroom, reviewing submissions and sending out volunteer letters. Assist coordinator with administration work for in person events and attend event to supervise the high school students in conservation work on TRCA or partner sites.

  • Moderate virtual programs: Launch polls, organize comments and questions and provide technical support during virtual programs.

  • Provide on-site support for summer camps by signing in campers, confirming covid screening questions, tracking any additional information provided by parents/guardians and supervising campers with light recreational activities at the start or end of the camp day.

  • Other duties as required.

What you will need to succeed:

  • Post-secondary education in an environmental field, education or equivalent, an asset.       

  • Experience working in a camp, school or similar setting.

  • Experience developing and leading nature interpretation activities in the outdoors; as well as online/virtual program delivery.

  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills.

  • Active and current First Aid and CPR certificate.

  • Ability to work flexible work hours.

  • Comfortable working on rough terrain and off-trail at work sites.

  • Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Screening is required for this position.

  • Daily access to a vehicle and a valid Ontario drivers' license required.
