Senior Field Staff, Construction Services - Full-Time Position

Position Overview:

Number of positions available: 3

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Construction Projects and site-supervision of the Site Supervisor, the Senior Field Staff, Construction Services carries out construction activities on erosion control, slope stabilization, stream restoration, infrastructure protection, park development and other environmental engineering projects. This position requires interaction with the public through relaying information such as trail closures and various types of work taking place that may impact them. Overall this position plays an integral role in ensuring the protection of land and infrastructure in TRCA’s watershed.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) year of post-secondary education in resource management, restoration ecology, environmental sciences, fish and wildlife management or related field.
  • Experience in general construction.
  • Experience in operating trucks, power tools, and small equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Ontario Traffic Manual – Book 7.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with the general public and colleagues in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Ability to utilize various methods of communication on-site with all crew members including heavy equipment operators and various contractors.
  • Computer literacy using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Lotus Notes, and TRCA Staff Hub occasionally.
  • Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR).
  • Valid Ontario "G" driver's licence.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with the implementation of a range of engineering projects by performing duties such as installing fencing, signage, plant materials, and erosion control products.
  2. Perform checker/flagger and traffic control duties at various sites throughout TRCA’s jurisdiction.
  3. Assist with site layout and drawing interpretation including laser level set up and operation.
  4. Install and maintain various erosion control products such as silt soxxs, straw mats, and non-woven geo-textiles.
  5. Assist with the installation of products such as armour stone, vegetative rip rap buttress, and mechanically stabilized earth walls.
  6. Provide leadership on site during the installation of various in-water works including vegetative buttresses, pool-riffle sequences, and bio-engineering techniques (root wads).
  7. Install and maintain coffer dams and pumping systems to establish a dry working area.
  8. Operate trucks (including small dump trucks) and trailers when required.
  9. Direct the public to project notice signage and possibly provide contract information for additional information and inquiries.
  10. Refer detailed questions and complaints to Site Supervisor.
  11. Complete a daily inspection of safety fencing to ensure public safety.
  12. Train new junior field staff, sharing knowledge gained from on-site experience.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
